The Zumba Dancing Craze

It seems everyone is talking about Zumba dancing these days.  Love it or hate it, it is hard not to be impressed that since humble beginnings in Columbia in the mid-1990s, it has swept the world.  There are now more than 110,000 locations in 125 countries where licensed Zumba instructors take classes.  Quite significant.

At Henry G we think Zumba is doing great things for dance.  Although the dance steps are basic compared to what most of us are used to, we believe it shows that even basic dance steps are great for fitness, toning, balance, rhythm and are a lot of fun!  With a little knowledge of the basic dance steps, Zumba can only act as a stepping stone to attract dancers to other forms of dancing such as salsa, flamenco, tango and other dancing genres.

We can thank Columbian fitness and dance instructor Alberto “Beto” Perez for Zumba.  In the 90s, Alberto forgot his aerobics tape for his fitness class so substituted Latin music instead.  The class loved it and he knew he was onto a good thing.  He believed it could be popular in the America, so over the next few years he made four trips to Miami to pitch his idea. Unfortunately he barely spoke English and had little money which made it difficult to sell, but finally in 1999 a fitness manager gave him a chance by asking him to teach her in an empty gym. A few people passing by watched and liked the look of it and after 20 minutes, there were 15 people, all interested in signing up for classes.  Alberto was 10 minutes late to his first class after getting stuck in traffic and he didn’t even have the English to say sorry, but it didn’t seem to matter as they loved it.  Zumba dancing was released nationwide in the United States in 2002 and has since gone global.

Although there are new evolutions of Zumba dancing, it originally included basic rhythms from salsa, reggaeton, tango, meringue, samba, flamenco and even belly dance.  There is now Zumba dancing for kids aged 4-12, for the oldies, Zumba with toning stick and in Zumba in the swimming pool.  Its popularity is astounding, although not surprising as it is built on the foundation of dance.  The more people having fun and staying healthy by dancing the better, no matter what genre.

If you’re wondering how to choose Zumba dancewear, it’s important that you wear clothing that is comfortable and light as you will sweat.  Zumba dance shoes should be flexible, comfortable and light.
